Moth

Item No. 6

“As a spiritual messenger some say the moth represents change, transformation, endings and even the mystery of the night.”
Description:

Here in The Last Catalog, the moth comes in multiple varieties, varying in appearance and size. The moth is a bespoke item, like The Salamander. In this season of The Last Catalog, you may order it in brown, gray, white, or a metallic variety. (Speciality pricing for the bold patterns and black and red wings). Note specifications as sizes vary from tiny to massive, and chunky to hairy. As a spiritual messenger, some say the moth represents change, transformation, endings and even the mystery of the night. Practically speaking, however, moths play a vital role in the food web for songbirds, mammals, and other insects. Birds feed caterpillars to their young. Like their relative, the butterfly, (they both belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects) moths are pollinators, especially those that find their way in the night, after dark. Why buy? Moths also belong to that rather mysterious group of insects that metamorphose — to undergo complete metamorphosis, they start as eggs, then become caterpillars, then pupae, and finally they blossom into winged adults. By the way, some now speculate that a moth can hear a dying plant’s cry.
Cost:

A moth is priceless, obviously. Practically speaking, though there is a palpable cost, if we lose them. Baby birds will miss feeding on caterpillars and who knows how long they might last? The flowers will miss the hum and the beauty of the chunky, hairy, tiny or massive creatures that used to visit. And they remind us that in fact, in spite of our societal misgivings about aging that perhaps we have it all upside down. Perhaps, after all, we can always be young after we’re old. Our life, this life, might simply be a metamorphosis.

It also seems that practically speaking, metamorphosis aside, that there will be a pretty significant cost to the food web for songbirds, mammals, and other insects. And, hungry baby birds. See also How Butterfly Numbers Are Dropping, Or Not, Near You.

Other specifications:

Perhaps we’ll simply miss this insect’s beauty.
